Council Vice President Fred Richardson Praises Planning Commission’s Vote on Proposed Augusta Evans Development:

“I appreciate the work of the city staff, Planning Commission, developer and citizens of Midtown who have worked so hard on this project. Thanks to them, today is a great day for District 1. This grocery store and shopping village will serve all the neighborhoods east of I-65 - eliminating a food desert. I'm very pleased that this important project is moving forward.

It will be the largest economic development project for Midtown since the Mobile Infirmary, generating $1.3 million in taxes initially and employing 236 of our citizens. It is the anchor that will attract and spur new needed growth in a community that is starving for shops, restaurants and coffee houses.

Publix is a win, win for everybody. It will take an abandoned asbestos infected school that served as the one major source of flooding for all contiguous neighborhoods.

Other communities will surely come to take lessons from our Publix, with added amenities for walking, bike riding, mixed shopping, or just lounging around the beautiful water garden steeped in an array of beautiful flowers, with a colorful water fountain in the center.”
