STRATEGIES FOR DRUG FREE ZONE INITIATIVE
  • Public meeting to inform community.
  • Post “DRUG FREE ZONE” signs in community.
  • Send self-addressed postage free, post card to every residence in community for them to report suspected illegal activity.
  • Pamphlet sent from Police Department acquainting community of the importance and the need for citizens and police to work together.
  • Each street in Drug Free Zone Area has a Captain who has the address and phone number of each person on the street. Captains gather information weekly.
  • All Captains report to Street Captain’s Coordinator, who is regularly in contact with Neighborhood Patrol Officers.
  • Map of Drug Free Zone sent to each resident.
  • Joint letter endorsing Drug Free Zone signed by Mayor Mike Dow, Council President Clinton L. Johnson, Police Chief Sam Cochran and Councilman Fred Richardson of District 1.
  • Police beat created around Drug Free Zone Area, to insure police presence.
  • Drug Free Indicator located throughout the Drug Free Zone to keep citizens up-to-date on progress.
  • Quarterly news conference held to apprise the community and City of progress.
  • Improve street lighting to enhance visibility at night so any criminal activity can be identified.
