The Criminal Investigation Section investigates hundreds of cases each month. A captain who answers to the head of the Investigative Operations Division commands it. The Criminal Investigation Section follows up on all crimes under its jurisdiction that are unresolved by the officer on the street.A reorganization of the MPD in 2008, eliminated the Burglary Unit as a stand-alone unit at headquarters, and instead provided burglary detectives in all the precincts to answer to the captains of the precincts. By placing these detectives in the precincts, the precinct commanders are better able to utilize them as resources.
