Organized crime is the focus of the Intelligence Unit. Officers assigned to the unit identify and compile information on all aspects of organized crime, targeting those individuals whose associations or activities pose a threat to the community. Examples would include racketeers, hoodlums, and racial agitators. The unit relies on sophisticated resources and shared data with other law enforcement agencies and keeps Chief Garrett well-informed on all known criminal activities so manpower and technology can be strategically allocated. The unit also is charged with protecting the mayor through the Mayor's Security Detail.
A lieutenant or officer of higher rank commands the Intelligence Unit and is immediately subordinate to the Deputy Chief of Police for Support Services.
