FACT SHEET: City of Mobile to embark on first phase of the Mobile Greenway

April 04, 2017

"This is a monumental step towards restoring Three Mile Creek to its historic significance. Three Mile Creek was Mobile's drinking water source before World War II, and now it can once again connect communities throughout the City of Mobile. This new trail will encourage fitness, beautify a vital waterway and educate citizens." -Mayor Stimpson

City Action: The City of Mobile is moving forward with construction on the first phase of the Mobile Greenway, the next step towards building a multi-model pathway that will link neighborhoods, businesses and residents across Mobile. The City is now leading the planning and construction efforts that will use a phased approach that builds the trail in sections over time. The Three Mile Creek Greenway Trail Management Plan is expected to be complete this summer that will be the framework that identifies next steps, cost estimates, community benefits, easement needs and logical project section priorities.

Pending Council approval:

  • Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) grant award for $386,525 to fund the first section of the Mobile Greenway.
  • $447,647 performance contract with James H. Adams & Son Construction Company Inc. to construct the first section of the trail
  • $40,000 performance contract with Dorsey & Dorsey Engineering, Inc. to be the project manager of this first phase.

Mobile Greenway First Phase:
  • Construction will begin on 0.8 miles of the 10' wide multi-use walking and biking trail.
  • The location will be along the north side of Three Mile Creek from Tricentennial Park to West Ridge Road.
  • Within a mile radius of the first phase, there are 69,000 residents, 900 businesses and 3 hospitals.
  • Amenities include a 10-foot wide concrete trail, a fitness zone, landscaping, solar lighting, benches, a kayak launch and educational signage.
  • Project is expected to be complete in 10 months.

About the Mobile Greenway:
The Three Mile Creek Greenway Trail is a part of a larger effort to transform the City of Mobile by creating a network of biking and pedestrian paths throughout the community that connect our parklands. This project will connect the community to Mobile's urban waterways, ease traffic congestion, provide additional avenues for citizens and guests to exercise and increase property values. The Three Mile Creek Greenway Trail is an effort to create a 12 mile multi-purpose biking and walking path which will connect Langan Park to Downtown Mobile and Mobile Bay.
