A Message from Mayor Stimpson - July 8th

Jul 8th, 2020

Posted in: MayorCOVID-19

Good evening,

It is 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8 and I am writing to give you an update on the City of Mobile's efforts regarding COVID-19.

As of tonight, there have been 4,341 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Mobile County, an increase of 108 since Tuesday. There are 311 who have been hospitalized to date, and 140 people have died due to Coronavirus. A total of 2,269 are presumed recovered.

Our goal is not just to prevent people from getting sick and dying from this disease. That's a difficult challenge on its own, but to make it even more difficult we are trying to minimize the economic damage the virus is having on our families and small businesses.

It's a delicate balance. On our side we have some of the world's greatest doctors, nurses, hospital workers and first responders. We have a smart and devoted team at City Hall. And, we have a community that knows how to rally together to make it through tough times.

On the other side is a virus that can strike anyone at any time - young and old, rich and poor, and in any neighborhood in our city.

In this battle against an evil enemy, we all have a part to play. You can do your part by wearing a face covering. Just as our parents and grandparents sacrificed to help America turn the tide in World War II, the simple act of wearing a mask can help us prevail over COVID-19.

I have heard from so many citizens who reject the idea of wearing a mask, and who hate the fact that the city passed an ordinance requiring they be worn in public. I am sure I will receive many angry responses about it again tonight.

I understand the frustration. But if enough of us are willing to make this individual sacrifice, we will make it that much more difficult for COVID to get a foothold in Mobile.

The goal is not to write citations, it is to encourage you to adopt this healthy and necessary habit.

Tomorrow I will participate in a mayoral town hall meeting hosted by AL.com. I invite you to join us live at 11 a.m. at www.facebook.com/aldotcom or www.youtube.com/aldotcom

Thank you as always for your prayers and words of encouragement, which are appreciated more than you may ever know.
