A Message from Mayor Stimpson - June 11

Good evening,

It is 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, and I am writing to give you an update on the City of Mobile’s efforts regarding COVID-19.

As of tonight, there have been 2,614 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Mobile County, out of 31,028 total tests.. Please note that the total test figure is now updated weekly by the Mobile County Health Department.

There were 51 new patients with active COVID-19 as of this morning. That follows 59 from the day before. These numbers are significantly higher than the average over the past few weeks.

Health experts think this increase may be related to problems in the statewide surveillance system that were identified and fixed this week. However, it may be an indication that the virus is making a resurgence. We will continue to watch these figures closely in the days ahead.

There are 128 deaths attributed to the virus, an increase of 1 since Tuesday.

Looking around the state, the number of coronavirus cases in Alabama increased 848 since yesterday. That represents the highest single-day total to date.

The greatest increase was Montgomery, which added 146 cases. Twenty-six of Alabama’s 67 counties saw double-digit increase in the last 24 hours.

Alabama has administered 278,455 COVID-19 tests, 85,382 of them in the last 14 days with 5,925 positive in that period of time.

Alabama Department of Public Health statistics show 95% of the deaths in Alabama were among those with preexisting conditions, the most common being cardiovascular disease.

Please remember that COVID-19 is still active in our community and we all must continue the recommended safety guidelines:

  • Keep a safe distance of at least 6 feet from others
  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Wear a mask when shopping or when in public places

The state’s amended Safer at Home order remains in place through July 3. This order applies to any gathering of people in group settings. In those cases, please keep a safe distance and use a face covering.

Sincerely,

Sandy
