A Message from Mayor Stimpson - June 25

Good evening,

It is 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 25 and I am writing to give you an update on the City of Mobile's efforts regarding COVID-19.

Mobile County saw an increase of 48 new COVID cases over the past 24 hours. Yesterday's total of 103, which was a record high to date, was adjusted to 110 this morning by the Mobile County Health Department.

To date, we have recorded a total 3,241 patients with COVID-19. Of those, 280 have been hospitalized, or about 8.6 percent, and 135 have died, or about 4.2 percent. Another 1,882 are presumed recovered.

Note that these test results are only for confirmed lab tests and do not include positive "antibody" tests. They also do not include "repeat" positive test results, where a patient may have taken multiple tests.

This trend of increasing cases is a serious threat to public health. Today, we made the decision to cancel the City's plans for a July 4 fireworks event due to concerns about the potential spread of COVID-19.

Our team worked hard to develop a plan to safely conduct this annual event. I want to commend them for the extensive thought and preparation they put into the effort. However, with cases rising across Mobile County, and in consultation with health experts, we determined the risk of potential exposure was simply too great.

I want to thank the City Council for giving us the option to proceed with the event. I spoke with the council president this morning to inform him of our decision to cancel. He expressed support for our decision.

Please remember that COVID-19 remains active in our community and the virus is continuing to spread.

We must all do more to prevent the spread of the virus. COVID is preventable if we will just follow the safety guidelines as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control:

  • Keep a safe distance of at least 6 feet from others
  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Wear a mask when shopping or when in public places
  • Clean any surfaces around you

Statewide, the Alabama Department of Public Health reported 1,129 new coronavirus cases today, the most new cases in a single day since the start of the pandemic.

We are keeping close watch on the data and we are looking at additional steps to protect you from this threat to our community. The decisions we must make are difficult but necessary to keep you safe. Please do your part by following the CDC guidelines to protect yourself and those around you.

Sincerely,

Sandy
