A Message from Mayor Stimpson - November 25

Nov 25th, 2020

Posted in: MayorCOVID-19

Good evening,

It is 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday November 25, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.

Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 19,665 COVID-19 cases, which is an increase of 124 cases. To review the most recent detailed reports from MCHD, click here.

During the coming weeks, our teams of contractors will be continuing their work picking up remaining debris from hurricanes Sally and Zeta. However, our public works employees will be transitioning back to a regular trash collection schedule beginning Monday, November 30. Among other things, this means residents will need to put out trash no more than 48 hours before the scheduled pick-up day in their area.

To help residents get back into their old routines, we will not be issuing any tickets for non-compliance with our trash and garbage ordinances during the first two-week period and will issue written warnings instead. I encourage you to review our trash collection rules and schedule on the City's website. As a reminder, the make-up day for trash collection on Thanksgiving Day will be Saturday, November 28.

Yesterday, I joined the City Council in a proclamation recognizing Saturday, November 28, as "Small Business Saturday" in the City of Mobile. As we begin our holiday shopping, I'd ask you to keep in mind the small businesses that contribute to the local economy and the fabric of our community.

The holidays can be a make-or-break time for small businesses in a normal year, and given the impact on COVID-19, your support could mean even more this weekend. If you're hunting for those big-store deals on Black Friday, please remember to "shop small" on Saturday as well.

I know that many of your Thanksgiving plans may look a little different than they have in years past, but I wanted to remind you that we in the City of Mobile still have much to be thankful for.

I am personally thankful for the way we have come together over these last difficult months and taken steps to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our community and protect our fellow Mobillians. I am also thankful for the quality service our city employees have continued to provide even under challenging circumstances. Most of all, I am thankful for the good things on the horizon for our City.

It seems appropriate that tonight's closing should be a continuation of last night's message regarding Paul and his final message to the Thessalonians. In today's devotional, author Sarah Young points out that thanking God frequently is what makes it possible for us to "pray without ceasing."

"These thankful prayers provide a solid foundation on which you can build all your other prayers. If you practice thankfulness consistently, you have no time for worrying or complaining. Draw near to [God] with a grateful heart, and My Presence will fill you with Joy and Peace." As we celebrate tomorrow, let's challenge ourselves to count our blessings every day, not just on Thanksgiving.

Sleep tight,
