A Message from Mayor Stimpson - October 23

Oct 23rd, 2020

Posted in: MayorCOVID-19

Good evening,

It is 7 p.m. on Friday, October 23, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.

Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 16,887 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 2,381 cases. To review the detailed report, click here.  For a little context, the number of cases rose so significantly overnight due to a backlog of tests that were not reported to public health officials.

It's the policy of MCHD to record additional cases on the day they're reported by laboratories, but the positive results included in today's report stemmed from samples collected between June 1 and October 18. These additional cases do not represent any increase in local transmissions of COVID-19.

As we close out the first phase of our debris clean-up from Hurricane Sally, I want to remind you that a second pass will begin on Monday, October 26. We are also still accepting bagged yard debris at James Seals Community Center and Langan Municipal Park daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tonight, I'd like to talk to you about some of the ways we all invest in our community to make it a better place to call home. One of the ways the city can do this is through the employees who serve our citizens.

I saw an example of that this afternoon during a promotion ceremony for 11 members of the Mobile Police Department, many of whom have given years of service to our city. At the same time, the Mobile Fire Rescue Department was promoting seven of its firefighters. As they rise through the ranks, these men and women add to the collective experience of their departments and help make Mobile safer.

Another way we invest in our community is by getting out and serving individually. This morning we saw more than 100 volunteers participate in a community clean-up in Africatown. Our employees worked side-by-side with pastors, community groups, local businesses and residents who just wanted to help. Together, we collected more than 5,839 pounds of trash and debris along with 67 discarded tires.

As the week comes to a close and I reflect on where we are and where we're going, I'm reminded of one of the lessons about leadership taught by Solomon. His counsel was that leaders should be wise investors giving first and giving generously. Whether it be your time, influence or treasures, if you don't give, you can't expect a return. But if you do give, you can expect your return to be in proportion to your giving.

There are some Mobilians who have given so much to the betterment of their fellowman and our community. However, most of us could do more. So, let's resolve to do so. You are uniquely qualified to do something that no one else may be able to do. Figure out what it is and do it! Hoping you get a good night's sleep and have a safe, healthy and productive weekend.

Sleep tight,
