A Message from Mayor Stimpson - January 25

Jan 25th, 2021

Posted in: MayorCOVID-19

Good evening,

It is 7:50 p.m. on Monday, January 25, and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.

Today, the Mobile County Health Department reports 31,884 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 118 cases. To review the most recent detailed report, click here.

The City of Mobile has published a page dedicated to information about COVID-19 vaccines on our website. Because the availability of vaccinations and who qualifies to receive them are continually changing, we wanted to create a resource for information about where vaccines are being offered as well as information from local hospitals and public health officials. You can find that page by clicking here.

COVID-19 has disrupted all of our lives in some way over the past several months. However, we’ve also seen many people find new ways to safely connect to the community through innovation and technology.

This morning Scott Speck and the Mobile Symphony Orchestra hosted two live streamed Young People's Concerts. Almost 6,000 students from 25 different schools in the area were able to experience Carnival of the Animals thanks to a generous grant from the Alabama State Department of Education.

Throughout February, the City of Mobile and specifically our Parks and Recreation Department will be celebrating Black History Month with a number of events, discussions and presentations highlighting black history and culture. There will be a movie series with panel discussions, a special Black History Art Walk on Friday, Feb. 12 and several other events throughout the month. You can find a full list below.

In Leadership Promises for Every Day, author J. Maxwell recounts what Nathan said when he confronted King David in 2nd Samuel. He had to have felt utterly secure in his plan of confrontation, or it would have backfired. Maxwell notes that security provides the foundation for strong leadership.

“When you feel insecure, you drift from your mission whenever trouble arises. You must feel secure when people stop liking us, when funding dips, when morale dips, or when others reject us. If we don’t feel secure, fear will eventually cause us to sabotage our leadership.”

When dealing with uncharted territory, as we all have over the past year, it’s easy to feel insecure in your decision making or second guess yourself. I have been able to remain confident in our decisions because of the people who make up our team here at the City of Mobile. We have a diverse and dedicated staff who believe in our shared goal of making this city the best it can be.

Sleep tight,
