City of Mobile celebrating Juneteenth with two local events next week
Mobile, Ala. — The City of Mobile Events Department and Mobile Parks and Recreation Department (MPRD) are each hosting events next week to commemorate the Juneteenth holiday.
To kick things off, MPRD’s Breakthrough Teens program will be hosting the “Juneteenth Jump Off” basketball tournament on Wednesday, June 18. This family-friendly, 3-on-3 basketball tournament is open to local teenagers and will take place at Sage Park from 3 to 6 p.m. For those who aren’t interested in competing, the event will also include food trucks, local vendors and inflatables for children thanks to the men and women from the United States Coast Guard Sector Mobile.
MPRD is still looking to add teams to the tournament field. Each team can have a maximum of five players. Space is limited, so register today if you and your team want to participate. There is no cost to register a team, so head over to mprd.recdesk.com to sign up. Breakthrough Teens is one of the MPRD’s many programs aimed at bringing young Mobilians together for family-friendly activities.
Our Events staff is also hosting a community wide Juneteenth celebration at Mardi Gras Park on June 19. From 2 to 5 p.m., this free public celebration will feature a live DJ, line-dancing, games, crafts, inflatables, food trucks, market vendors and more. Some of the highlights will include a performance by the Mobile Alabama Africatown Drummers, and there will also be facepainting for the little ones.
The event will also include catered hot dogs and hamburgers free of charge, while supplies last, so come hungry. This is a great way to celebrate freedom, flavor and friendship during the holiday.
If you’re a local vendor who wants to participate, we still space available! The deadline to register is Thursday, June 12. To register as a market vendor, or a non-profit, visit: mprd.recdesk.com.
