Mobile, Ala. — Mayor Sandy Stimpson, City Council Vice President Gina Gregory, state officials and local stakeholders will celebrate the start of the Langan Lake dredging project on Thursday, June 5.

As the third phase of the Three Mile Creek Watershed Restoration Project, the dredging of Langan Lake will remove over 225,000 cubic yards of sediment from the lakebed, improving overall water quality, removing invasive species, and opening the lake to expanded recreational uses, such as kayaking and canoeing. The work at Langan will also include drainage improvements, which will utilize dredge spoil for construction. The current concrete drainage channel on the northeast side of the park will be converted into a naturalized stream, featuring stones and native plant material.

Earlier this month, the Mobile City Council awarded the contract for the dredging project to Hughes Companies Inc., which is set to begin work on the dredging project this month. Led by owner, Preston Hughes, Hughes Companies is a local small business. At $15.1 million, it is the largest contract the City of Mobile has ever awarded to a local small business.

On Thursday, June 5, city officials will join representatives from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and Hughes Companies Inc. for the official start of the project. Media are invited to cover the groundbreaking and learn more about this exciting project.  We will also be previewing the Paddle at the Park Event happening at Langan Lake on Saturday, June 7.

This family-friendly event will give participants an opportunity to kayak and canoe on Langan Lake at no charge thanks to a partnership with Mobile Kayak Rental and Mobile Baykeeper. There will also be educational programming highlighting the science behind hydraulic dredging as part of the Mobile Parks and Recreation Department’s latest S.T.R.E.A.M. Saturday programming.

This project was funded, in part. with federal funding from the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council (RESTORE Council) under the Resources and Ecosystems Sustainability, Tourist Opportunities, and Revived Economies of the Gulf Coast States Act of 2012 (RESTORE Act). Additional funding was provided by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management and the City of Mobile.
