‘Historic Day for Housing’
State approves four affordable housing developments in Mobile
Mobile, Ala. — The Alabama Housing Finance Authority (AHFA) has selected for award four affordable housing developments in Mobile, marking the first time in the state’s history that this many city-backed projects have been awarded in a single funding cycle.
The City of Mobile partnered with local developers on several projects that were under consideration by the AHFA and having four of them approved in a single year is truly historic. Today’s announcement will help bring 218 new affordable housing units to Mobile and more than $81.7 million in total investment.
These projects also represent a significant milestone in Mayor Sandy Stimpson’s ongoing efforts to expand access to quality, affordable housing in some of Mobile’s oldest neighborhoods.
“This is a transformational day for Mobile,” said Mayor Sandy Stimpson. “For years, we’ve been working to remove the barriers that make it hard for developers to build affordable housing in the areas of Mobile where it’s needed most. By contributing local resources and forging strong partnerships in the private sector, we’re seeing historic levels of new investment. These four projects will strengthen neighborhoods, create new opportunities for Mobilians, and give more families a safe place to call home.”
The developments receiving awards are spread across the city and will bring new or expanded affordable housing options to some of Mobile’s most historic communities. These include:
- Hurtel Crossing – 56 units | $1 million City contribution
- Maryvale Village – 56 units for local seniors | $1 million City contribution
- Fred Marshall Court – 50 units | $10.5 million City contribution
- Providence Park – 56 units | $7.5 million City contribution
"This is a monumental step forward for Mobile, and I’m incredibly proud to see this level of investment and commitment coming into our neighborhoods,” Mobile City Council President C.J. Small said. “To have this many city-supported affordable housing developments approved in a single funding cycle is truly historic. These projects are about restoring dignity, creating opportunity, and strengthening the foundation of our communities. This kind of progress shows what’s possible when we work together to put families first."
Altogether, these four projects represent more than $81.7 million in total investment, including contributions from the City of Mobile, federal tax credits and state bonds through AHFA, and private capital from development partners. This year’s success is a result of sustained collaboration across all levels of government, and these projects would not have been possible without the support of state and federal resources.
Apart from Providence Park, which is being funded through the City’s American Rescue Plan Act allocation, the City of Mobile’s financial contributions to these projects will come from HUD Disaster Recovery allocations awarded by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.
“I want to thank the Alabama Housing Finance Authority, Governor Kay Ivey, ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell, and the great private sector partners making these historic gains in affordable housing possible,” Mayor Stimpson said. “I also want to commend our entire Neighborhood Development Department and Senior Director Jamey Roberts for their vision, leadership, and support throughout this process.”
