HISTORIC DEVELOPMENT DIGITIZATION PROJECT ASSISTANT

The City of Mobile seeks to hire a part-time Digitization Project Assistant, who will aid in the arrangement, description, and digitization of paper records of the Mobile Historic Development Commission (MHDC). This position will work closely with the Digitization Project Manager and MHDC Staff in the completion of duties required under the City of Mobile’s Certified Local Government agreement and the projects outlined in the City’s application for grant funding.

The position currently is expected to be limited to a 9-month term, or until Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) grant monies have been exhausted. The position may be extended by further grant funding. 

JOB REQUIREMENTS: Requires coursework in an undergraduate program in historic preservation, architectural history, history, archaeology, or a closely related field and a minimum of one year’s experience in historical research and/or electronic and paper records management. Years of work experience may be substituted for education. Must be familiar with Microsoft Office and have the ability to maintain data within spreadsheets.

Qualifications: This position requires attention to detail, time management skills, program management skills, and the ability to communicate with internal staff in a professional manner. Must have good knowledge of archival professional standards, best practices, and research techniques; ability to develop metadata and keywords; ability to determine appropriate file formats; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to operate and utilize computer software; ability to operate and utilize digitization equipment (professional-grade scanners), and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Historic Development staff and other City department employees. 

Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of architectural terms; Ability to compare written and graphic (architectural plans) work descriptions with ongoing work and as-built conditions; Familiarity with archival digitization procedures; Experience with digitization projects; graduate degree in historic preservation, architectural history, history, archaeology, or a closely related field. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to): The Digitization Project Assistant will be responsible for assisting in the arrangement, description, and scanning of property files on locally designated historic district properties in the Mobile Historic Development Commission office in such a way that the regular work of the office is not disrupted. The Digitization Project Assistant will work a part-time, 15-hour week within the hours of M-F 8 am to 5 pm until approximately September 30, 2022, or until grant funding is fully expended, whichever comes first.
