City Council Unanimously Approves Development for Augusta Evans Site
Project Will Bring Publix Grocery Store to Communities East of 1-65
Mobile, AL – The City Council today unanimously approved plans for a development -anchored by a Publix grocery store- at the site of the old Augusta Evans School on Florida Avenue. The vote by the Council is the culmination of a six-year effort by Council Vice President Fred Richardson to bring a major grocery store to communities east of 1-65.
“This is a great day for our District and the whole city,’ said Councilman Richardson. “I truly appreciate all the work the developer, community groups and local residents have put into this project to ensure it will be the best it can be.”
Over the course of this process, Councilman Richardson worked closely with the developers and members of the community to ensure that any concerns of local residents were addressed. The final development plan, which includes the site of the former Augusta Evans School and adjoining properties, includes the anchor Publix grocery store and 5 additional buildings for store fronts.
In addition to the votes approving the rezoning requests and the Planned Unit Development (PUD) for the development, the Council also voted on an incentive package for the project. The City will provide up to one million dollars of incentives towards the project that will provide for infrastructure improvements at the corner of Old Shell Road and Florida Avenue. These improvements will include widening the turn lane on Old Shell Road, improving traffic signals and putting in and improving sidewalks. The developer will not receive any of the funds until after the improvements have been completed.
Today’s votes approved rezoning requests and the Planned Unit Development (PUD) for the development. Construction is expected to begin in October. The project is estimated to produce $1.3 million in sales tax annually and provide jobs for 236 citizens.
