Councilman Manzie Calls for Creation of Department of Youth Service
To Ensure Youth of Mobile Opportunity to Succeed & Thrive

Mobile, AL – Councilman Levon Manzie today called for the creation of a Department of Youth Services in Mobile. The Department’s aim would be to ensure the youth of Mobile are given the opportunity to succeed and thrive in our city through improving access to key educational, extracurricular and employment programs.

“For the sake of our city, we must improve opportunity and outcomes for our youth,” said Councilman Manzie. “Their success is absolutely integral to the success of our communities and Mobile as a whole.”

The Department of Youth Services would:

  • Coordinate with the city and nonprofit organizations providing educational, extracurricular and employment programs throughout the school year and summer.
  • Provide a comprehensive view of public and nonprofit youth programs to better allow the city to identify any major gaps including in types of programming (educational, extracurricular and employment), for certain age ranges and/or areas within the city where youth do not have access.
  • Ensure parents of youth throughout the city -especially those in underserved communities- are aware of existing programs.
  • Work specifically with the city’s Parks & Recreation Department on promoting existing and creating other programmatic activities during the summer.
  • Coordinate a summer youth employment program for students of working age.

Many cities throughout the state and country have such departments that are dedicated to the youth of their communities. At tomorrow’s council meeting, Councilman Manzie will urge the Administration and colleagues on the Council to support this effort.
