MFRD Honors July Firefighter of the Month

Mobile, AL - On Thursday, June 28, 2018, Engine 16 and Rescue 23 were dispatched to a possible drowning on Hillwood Drive South. Engine 16, consisting of Firefighters Patrick Henderson, Joseph O’Connor and Driver Dennis Zirlott, arrived on scene first to a crowd of numerous children. The crew quickly grabbed the necessary gear and made the approximately 300 yard walk down to the dock on Dog River.

Upon arriving at the dock, several children pointed to where the patient had jumped in and was last seen. Immediately, Firefighter Patrick Henderson removed his boots and dove into the water. Firefighter Henderson came up for a breath and then submerged himself again in the murky water. After what seemed like an eternity, Firefighter Henderson emerged from the water with his arms wrapped around the patient. Firefighter Henderson brought the teen to the edge of the dock, where the patient was pulled up and CPR was administered immediately.

Rescue 23, with Driver Bobby Schmidt and Driver Michael Jordan, arrived a few minutes later and continued CPR. The patient was loaded for transport; and high quality CPR was delivered while making the trek back to the ambulance. The patient was delivered to Springhill Memorial Hospital and care was transferred to the ER team. Firefighter Henderson’s heroic actions exemplify what Mobile Fire-Rescue personnel provide each and every day.

On behalf of all the citizens and with sincere thanks, Mayor Sandy Stimpson, the Mobile City Council, and Fire Chief Mark Sealy recognize Firefighter Patrick Henderson as FIREFIGHTER OF THE MONTH for July 2018.
