Mobile, Ala. — The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department (MFRD) is proud to announce Firefighter Midarius Witherspoon as the Firefighter of the Month for May 2024. Joining MFRD in March 2018 and currently serving on Engine 8, Witherspoon embodies the spirit of teamwork that defines the department.
“What I like about the fire department is the teamwork,” Witherspoon shared. “You can pull up to a fire no matter what company, if they're in the west or in the east of Mobile, everybody's going to work together…I really like that about the department.”
Beyond his dedication to collaboration, Witherspoon is known for his initiative and problem-solving skills. According to his supervisor, Captain Robert Brown, “He’s a self-starter who gets the process going to get things done before others have begun. He’s calm and cool and doesn't let things bother him. He’s quick to figure things out on the fly."
These qualities are especially valuable for members of the technical rescue team, a role Witherspoon further honed by taking a nine-day structural collapse class at the Alabama Fire College earlier this year.
Witherspoon’s commitment extends beyond his core firefighting duties. He holds both rescue technician and hazmat technician specialties, demonstrating his dedication to advanced training. His well-rounded skillset is further complemented by a Physical Fitness Ribbon and his role as a relief driver. The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department is honored to have Firefighter Midarius Witherspoon on the team. His teamwork, problem-solving skills, and dedication to continuous learning make him a valuable asset.
