Mobile, Ala. — The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department (MFRD) is proud to announce Fire Service Driver Robert J. “Bobby” Ching as the Firefighter of the Month for September 2024. Driver Ching joined the fire department in 2015 and currently serves as a driver on Engine 12.
As hurricane Milton roared toward the west coast of Florida last week, Ching set out on his third deployment since August as part of Alabama Task Force 1 (AL-TF1). He worked tirelessly behind the scenes loading equipment and then drove one of the 18-wheelers to the scene before assimilating into his role on the rescue team.
His supervisor, Captain Matthew Lindsey, said that Ching’s passion for being a firefighter and his leadership have been instrumental to their crew’s success. “Bobby epitomizes what we want our firefighters to be,” he said.
Driver Ching is also a hazmat technician and a rescue technician and has been awarded the Physical Fitness ribbon.
