Parkway Storage Commercial Building Fire

Jul 17th, 2022

At approximately 12:18 PM, the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department responded to Parkway Storage at 2410 Dauphin Island Parkway. Witnesses reported seeing large quantities of smoke in the area, coming from the storage lot.

Upon arrival on scene, fire personnel confirmed heavy smoke present throughout the facility, stemming from one of the buildings. Crews located nearby hydrants and made their way to the involved storage building.

Unable to open locked storage units, firefighters made use of K-12 saws to cut their way through doors, accessing secured units to search for fire. Smoke conditions continued to escalate, indicating fire was expanding.

At approximately 12:36, 2nd alarm response requested to the scene. MFRD’s specialized rehabilitation unit (Rehab 1) soon arrived on scene, giving new perspective and capabilities for Incident Command. Rehab 1’s drone operator immediately launched a drone to the skies over the scene. With an infrared view, fire was quickly discovered.

Crews from 15 MFRD units worked to mitigate the incident, containing flames in involved units and protecting contents in adjacent storage units.

All signs of fire were successfully extinguished after approximately an hour of meticulous operations. Firefighters were able to contain flames to 6 storage units, saving the majority of contents in the rest of the involved structure. The 6 units and all of their contents were destroyed, causing an estimated $500,000 in damages.

There were no fire personnel injured as a result of the incident.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
