City of Mobile opens public Wi-Fi in downtown parks

Feb 21st, 2014

MOBILE, Ala. - Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson joined city officials at a news conference today to announce the opening of free public Wi-Fi service in Bienville Square and Cathedral Plaza in downtown Mobile.

"Internet access is critical to Mobile's digital future, and we're excited to bring this new service to two of our most historic and treasured public spaces," Stimpson said. "These new wireless networks are an important step toward building a more robust and family-friendly downtown Mobile."

Stimpson followed the announcement by participating in a live web chat with AL.com and reporters from the Press-Register newspaper.

The new networks were installed by Aerohive, a leading wireless technology firm working under contract with the city.

Bienville Square, bordered by Dauphin Street in the center of downtown, is a historic park named for Mobile's founder, Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville.

Cathedral Square, just a few blocks west on Dauphin Street, neighbors the historic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

"We invite all of our citizens and visitors to take advantage of this free service - whether it's to learn more about Mobile's rich history and attractions, keep up with the latest news or even pay a few bills," said Stimpson.
