Alabama Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (ABCCEDP):

The goal of the ABCCEDP is to reduce breast and cervical cancer mortality and morbidity by increasing the availability of cancer education, screening and treatment to women, age 40 and older, who are income-eligible and are uninsured or underinsured. More than 5,000 women have been screened through this program since its inception in 1997 in the Mobile area; however, it is estimated that over 7,500 other women in our community are eligible for this important and life saving screening program. Program benefits include FREE yearly pelvic and pap exams, clinical breast exams, mammograms and ultrasounds, and additional tests if necessary. Treatment services may also be available through Medicaid for patients screened through the program and diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer or precancerous lesions.

Additional Breast Cancer Facts:

  • Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, aside from skin cancer.

  • Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women, after lung cancer.

  • This year, it is expected 3,400 women in Alabama will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer.

  • Out of the 3,400 expected cases, 600 are estimated to die. Many of these deaths will occur disproportionately among women of racial and ethnic minority and low-income groups.

  • By age 50, 1 in every 50 women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer

  • In the early stages of breast cancer, there are usually no signs or symptoms and may only be detected by a mammogram.
