Mobile, Ala. — McGregor Ave. will close between Dauphin Street to Airport Blvd. on Monday, May 1, as the City of Mobile begins work on a major road project in the area.

The S. McGregor Avenue Project has been in the works for more than 15 years and will provide several necessary upgrades to what has grown into a significant thoroughfare. This $23 million project is being funded with a combination of federal, state and local dollars, and construction is being coordinated by the City of Mobile and the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT).

The project will include a complete rebuild of the roadway and the underground infrastructure along McGregor Ave. The roadway will be slightly widened, and a roundabout will be added at the intersection of Dauphin Street and McGregor Ave. In addition to roadwork, there will also be drainage, signal and lighting improvements and the addition of a sidewalk and multi-use path.

The project is estimated to take two years. During that time, traffic on this section of McGregor Ave. will be limited to residents and emergency and service vehicles only. All other motorists must use alternate routes on University Blvd. and Interstate 65. Airport Blvd, Spring Hill Ave., Old Shell Road, Bit and Spur Road, University Blvd., I-65 and the I-65 service roads will not be impacted. The City of Mobile will also be working to minimize cut-through traffic in nearby neighborhoods, including Llanfair, Yester Oaks, and Country Club Estates. The Mobile Police Department will also assist with traffic control throughout the area. All local businesses on Airport Blvd. will remain open throughout the project, and we encourage Mobilians and visitors to use them as they usually would. The closure will be somewhat disruptive, but the result will be something that benefits residents in the area and the tens of thousands of motorists who use McGregor Ave. every day. We encourage regular users to go ahead and identify an alternate route now. We have already been in direct communication with nearby residents and will continue to engage neighborhoods and businesses throughout the project. We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation while these upgrades are made.
