City Council approves TIGER Phase 1-2 Construction Contract

Jul 30th, 2019

Design

Yesterday the City Council approved one of the largest contracts to improve our infrastructure.  This $16 million dollar contract begins the first phase of the One Mobile: Reconnecting People, Work, and Play through Complete Streets Initiative. The phases include Broad Street to Canal Street to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and Beauregard Street from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue to Lawrence Street. This initiative is possible through the funding of the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant. The goal of the initiative is to:

  • Provide safe pedestrian and bicycle friendly access for residents, workers, and visitors
  • Reconnect severed neighborhoods currently divided by Broad Street's seven lane expanse
  • Accommodate all modes of travel with efficient connections between neighborhoods, transportation hubs, major employment centers, and local destinations
  • Reconstruct aging infrastructure
  • Create attractive, welcoming, and cohesive streetscapes.

We can't wait for the transformation to begin in late September!

Sincerely,
Mayor Sandy Stimpson
