Rollers are used on both the soil layers and the asphalt that is placed for the final roadway. Some of the rollers use only their weight and number of passes over each layer to achieve the proper density or compaction of the soil and asphalt. Other rollers utilize vibration and weight to help compact the soil or asphalt.
