Therapeutics

The purpose of Therapeutics is to ensure that all community members are able to access meaningful recreational and leisure opportunities, regardless of ability.  We are here to work with you and your family to modify programs and provide support whenever necessary, to facilitate a successful and enjoyable experience.

Our goal is to provide a variety of quality recreation choices for people with or without disabilities within their own community so that they don’t have to travel far and wide to participate in accessible programming. We aim to increase community awareness, accessibility, and acceptance of individuals with different abilities, and to create a supportive and inclusive recreation environment here in the City of Mobile.

It's Your Choice

Whether in a Therapeutic Recreation program or in inclusive recreation settings with those who do not have disabilities, we'll find a way for you to get the most out of every leisure activity. We believe that involvement in leisure experiences is important to the quality of life for all individuals.

Need Help Selecting a Program?

If you need assistance in making recreation and leisure choices or exploring new and different possibilities, a leisure interest assessment may be appropriate. Our staff will identify an individual's needs, strengths, and interests through a leisure interest assessment that will help in pinpointing programs that match the individual's abilities and interests.

While inclusion services provide accommodations for disabled citizens to participate in existing programs, without fundamentally altering the program or activity, therapeutic recreation programs are separate, specially designed activities that aim to meet the physical, social, emotional and cognitive needs of their participants.

ADA Liaison

The ADA Liaison provides inclusion to individuals with disabilities and/or medical conditions who request modifications to participate in other Parks and Recreation programs. The City of Mobile Parks and Recreation Department welcomes the participation of all individuals, including those with disabilities or special needs. We are committed to compliance with the ADA and provide reasonable modifications to facilitate program participation. We request that modification requests are made 3 weeks in advance, so we can communicate and prepare appropriate modifications. To request a modification or for more information, please contact us via email at mprdada@cityofmobile.org or at 251-208-6169.

Inclusion

Inclusion is a service that provides accommodations to persons with disabilities for participation in recreation programs, facilities and leisure activities offered to the community. Inclusion also includes community and staff training, disability awareness programs, and accessibility of park trails and recreational facilities. Citizens with disabilities are encouraged to recreate with their peers by taking any class listed in our brochure. For more information or to request an accommodation, call or email 251-208-6169 or mprdada@cityofmobile.org.

Therapeutic Recreation

City of Mobile Parks & Recreation offers a variety of programs and activities for youth, teens and adults with disabilities. Each program is designed to meet the emotional, physical, social and cognitive needs of the participants. Therapeutic Recreation section of the Activity Brochure. If you have questions about any of the programs offered, email therapeutics@cityofmobile.org.
