FALLEN MOBILE FIREFIGHTER TO BE HONORED AT NATIONAL MEMORIAL SERVICE
Eighteen (18) members of the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department Honor Guard will be boarding a bus Friday, October 5, 2001 at approximately 2:00 p.m. heading to Emmitsburg, Maryland to attend and participate in the 20th Annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service. The service will honor 101 firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2000, including Mobile's own Paul Husband, who died in the performance of duty on September 27, 2000. President George W. Bush and Mrs. Bush are also scheduled to appear and lead the nation in paying tribute to the firefighters who died in the line of duty last year. The annual public tribute, held at the site of the official national monument to all fallen firefighters, will take place on Sunday, October 7, 2001. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation announced that the names of 101 firefighters from 38 states and Puerto Rico will be honored and added to the monument. Two firefighters who died in previous years will also be honored. All the fallen firefighter names, including Paul Husband, will be included on a bronze plaque, which is placed near the Monument along with the year, and state they resided.
This year's memorial service and a candlelight ceremony on Saturday evening will pay special tribute to the more than 300 New York City firefighters who were killed at the World Trade Center. Their names, and the names of others that died in the line of duty in 2001, will be inscribed on the monument at next year's ceremony.
The Memorial service is the culmination of Memorial Weekend activities held on the National Fire Academy campus in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Families and co-workers of the honored firefighters will attend Family Day activities on Saturday, October 6, with a public Candlelight Service scheduled for Saturday evening. The Sunday Memorial Service will begin at 10:00 a.m. (EDT).
Thousands are expected to attend the public tributes in Emmitsburg. The 20th Annual Memorial Service will also be broadcast live via satellite. Satellite coordinates are attached to this release.
