Fire Destroys Four Large Boats

Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-5806/Fax: (251) 208-5813 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org FIRE DESTROYS FOUR BOATS Mobile Firefighters were called to the Dog River Marina this morning, Saturday, September 6, 2003 to battle a fire aboard four (4) boats. The fire was reported at approximately 8:06 a.m. and when firefighters arrived at approximately 8:12 a.m. they reported 4 boats in the marina fully involved with fire. An employee on the scene reported seeing light gray smoke drifting in the marina and when he approached the boat the windows burst out in flames. Dog River Marina personnel and Miller Diving Company removed three of the four boats from the water. The fire appears to have originated on the “Dover” a 46 foot Sea Ray and spread three other boats in nearby slips. The other boats damaged were two 52-foot Hateras and a 46-foot Bertram. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Damage is estimated at $2.5 million. No injuries were reported. Engines 7, 9, 11, 16, 20; truck 24, rescue 7; Fire-Rescue Boat 7 and District 2 Chief Don Myers responded to the fire. Firefighters cleared the scene at approximately 1:30 p.m. ###
