Fire In Vacant 2-Story House

Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-5806/Fax: (251) 208-5813 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org FIRE IN LARGE VACANT 2-STORY HOUSE Mobile Firefighters were called to the scene of a large vacant 2-story house on fire, Monday, October 14, 2002 at 110 N. Ann Street. Mobile Fire-Rescue Dispatchers received numerous calls reporting the fire the first call from a passer-by was received at approximately 10:13 a.m. First firefighters arrived on the scene at approximately 10:17 a.m. and fire officials called for a 2nd alarm assignment at approximately 10:22 a.m. The fire appears to have originated on the first floor at the rear on or near a porch in that area. The fire spread up to the second floor into the attic and through the roof of the large wood frame structure. While working to extinguish the fire the roof of the structure collapsed as well as portions of the back wall. The cause of the fire, that reported no injuries, is still under investigation but Mobile Fire Investigators found evidence indicating that vagrants had been living in the vacant structure. According to information obtained by Fire Investigators Eva Cross owns the structure and Acceptance Credit Company was charged with selling the structure. Evans Crowe was listed as a possible buyer. Engines 2, 3, 8, truck 17, rescue 3, District 1 Chief Mike Faver responded to the 1st alarm. Engines 9, 12, truck 4 and District 3 Chief Bill Hunter responded on the 2nd alarm. ###
