Sep 6th, 2002

September 6, 2002 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2002-35) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-5806/Fax: (251) 208-5813 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org FIREFIGHTERS RESPOND TO SMALL FIRE AT LOCAL RESTAURANT Mobile Firefighters were called to respond to a fire in Justine's/The Pillars Restaurant located at 1757 Government Street. The call was received from a passerby on a cell phone at approximately 5:31 a.m. Friday, September 6, 2002. First firefighters arrived on the scene at approximately 5:36 a.m. and reported fire coming from the West Side of the large 3-story wood frame building. Firefighters called for a second alarm assignment because of the size of the building and unknown extent of the fire inside. Once firefighters made entry and began to attack the blaze they realized the fire was confined to a small dining room and the second alarm was downgraded to the initial responding units. It appears from the preliminary investigation by Mobile Fire Investigators that the fire possibly originated between the first floor ceiling the second level flooring. But a cause has not yet been determined and the investigation continues at the time of this release. Fire damage was confined to a small first floor dining area, which was part of an addition performed approximately 5 years ago. There was light to moderate smoke damage throughout the lower level. There was a small amount of fire damage on the second floor walls immediately above the first floor fire area. There was little to no smoke damage to the second floor area. There is no dollar damage estimate as of yet. No injuries were reported. Engines 8, 9, 23, truck 17, rescue 23, District 1 Chief Mike Farver responded. Engines 3, 12, truck 4 responded later as manpower relief. ###
