November 23, 2011 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2011-93) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org HOME OWNER INJURED IN KITCHEN MISHAP A 42-year-old woman received burns to her face, chest and both arms after a pan of grease caught fire at her 4015 Meadowwood Curve home Wednesday, November 23. The call was received at approximately 11:08 a.m. The owner’s son used a fire extinguisher to put the fire out prior to the arrival of firefighters. The injured woman told firefighters she was heating the grease up and left the kitchen, when she returned the grease was on fire. She attempted to put out the fire but instead splashed the hot, burning grease onto herself. Firemedics transported her to the University of South Alabama Medical Center for treatment. The fire was confined to the stove top. Engines 6, 19, 22; truck 5; rescue 18, 23 and District Chief Elbert Cross responded. TIPS: Never throw water on a grease fire. It’s best to use a fire extinguisher if you've had training. When a grease fire occurs, turn off the burner, and then cover with a lid that fits the pan. Never leave cooking unattended for ANY reason. If you must leave, turn everything off! ###
