Aug 27th, 2011

August 27, 2011 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2011-65) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org HOUSE FIRE AT GARDEN GROVE DRIVE Firefighters from Mobile Fire-Rescue and Theodore-Tillmans Corner Volunteer Fire Departments were called to a house fire Saturday morning, August 27, located at 7670 Garden Grove Drive. The call was dispatched at approximately 11:06 a.m. TTVFD was on scene already when MFRD Rescue 7 reported on the scene with smoke showing from the single-story, wood frame structure. Firemedics also discovered the 39-year-old occupant sitting on the front porch with burns. Firemedics immediately loaded him and transported to USAMC where he is being treated for 2nd degree burns over 70% of his body with a few 3rd degree burns. It appears the man may have been asleep when the fire started and attempted to unsuccessfully extinguish it. The fire originated in a back bedroom. Fire investigators discovered a large pile of clothes on stop of numerous electronics. The fire appears to have been caused by an electrical malfunction, catching the clothes on fire. Investigators also discovered what appeared to be the makings of a Meth Lab. MPD narcotics has been summoned to the scene to confirm, however, that does not appear to have caused the fire. Damage is estimated at approximately $30 thousand. No other injuries were reported. Engines 6, 7, 19; truck 24; rescue 6, 7; TTVFD and District Chief Johnny Morris responded. The Bureau of Fire Prevention with the assistance of MPD Narcotics is conducting the investigation. ###
