Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-5806/Fax: (251) 208-5813 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org HOUSE FIRE CAUSES ONE INJURY Mobile firefighters were called to the scene of a house fire located at 111 Columbia Street on Friday, August 3, 2001. The call was received at approximately 1:25 p.m. and firefighters arrived on the scene at approximately 1:29 p.m. reporting heavy fire showing at the front of the 1 story, wood frame structure. Mobile Firemedics treated and transported Mr. R. Jackson, 95, to the University of South Alabama Medical Center for minor smoke inhalation. The fire appears to have originated in the front living room near a loveseat, which was located under a window air conditioning unit. Jackson told Mobile Fire Investigators that he smelled smoke while in his bedroom where he sits on the bed each day looking out the window. Jackson reportedly got up and walked toward the living room and saw fire under the loveseat and escaped out the door to the yard. The fire spread to the dining room and attic above. There was smoke and heat damage throughout the structure. The cause of the fire that caused an estimated $25 thousand in damage is still under investigation. No other injuries were reported. Engines 12, 15, 23, truck 10, rescue 23 and Acting District Chief Captain Brian Gilliland responded to the fire. ###
