JANUARY FIREFIGHTER OF THE MONTH
The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department’s Firefighter of the Month for January has been praised for his desire and dedication for going above and beyond his required duties.
In recognition of his enthusiasm and dedication to the job, Firefighter-Driver Steven J. Reed will be honored at breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at the Tiny Diny Restaurant located at 2159 Halls Mill Road. The Pleasant Valley Optimist Club sponsors the monthly ceremony.
Driver Reed has raised the bar high for his fellow firefighter-drivers. His supervisors have said there are few who compare to his daily work ethic. Reed doesn't just come into the station and wait for the next call to come in. A regular day at work for him consist of his routine checks of his equipment and fire truck. Cleaning the truck and equipment along with the engine room bay where the truck is housed. He continues to make sure of the readiness of his truck and equipment sometimes until after dark. His fellow firefighters have to make him stop long enough to eat. On the rare occasion he takes a break he spends it sitting down and studying a map of his first run area or some other job related study material. He has been known to spend his own money on items that enhances his or a crew members ability to perform their duty.
"I have had the privilege to supervise some very dedicated and exemplary employees in my 10 years as a Captain. Steven J. Reed stands out as one of the best I have ever been associated with", said his supervisor Captain Paul A. Cumbaa. "On the rare occasion that I do assign him a task, I can be sure of it being completed with enthusiasm. He does all this without complaining or asking for assistance."
Reed joined the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department in 1985. He is presently assigned as the Driver on Engine 20, Shift 2, at the Petrey Station located at 3471 Dauphin Island Parkway.
