May Firefighters of the Month

May 29th, 2013

May 29, 2013 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2013-14) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org MAY FIREFIGHTERS OF THE MONTH Today, Wednesday, May 29 the Pleasant Valley Opportunity Club presented the May Firefighter of Month honors to two Mobile Fire-Rescue (MFRD) Investigators. On Friday, February 8, 2013 Fire Investigators, Captains Bryan Smith and Chip Curreri were working parade detail for the Bureau of Fire Prevention. After conducting float inspections prior to the parade, Smith was standing at Claiborne and Civic Center Drive while Curreri had walked over to speak to someone with MPD. Smith was summoned by individuals in the crowd behind the barricade and was advised a girl had “passed out”. He climbed over the barricade and found an approximately 20-year-old female lying on her right side in the grass. A bystander advised him she had a previous existing heart condition. Smith determined the patient was not breathing and had no pulse. He requested a fellow MFRD employee to call a medical team for assistance. Shortly after initiating CPR his partner, Curreri, arrived and provided mouth to mouth ventilations while he continued to provide compressions. Upon arrival of MFRD Special Events medical teams, the patient was defibrillated with an AED and a pulse was restored. Ventilations were assisted as she was transferred to the care of Newman’s EMS for transport. An off duty MFRD medic was the lone ALS provider on the private service so Smith volunteered to ride to the hospital in order to continue patient care and stabilization efforts alongside the Paramedic for Newman’s EMS. An MFRD firefighter/EMT also rode to provide much needed assistance. The patient was delivered to the ER at Springhill Medical Center for continued care. After a brief stay in the hospital the patient was released and went home. ###
