MOBILE FIREFIGHTERS RESPOND TO BURNING METAL
Mobile firefighters were called to the Bredero Price Company for a fire in a hopper containing approximately 90% metal shavings, pellets and granular steel shot. The company is located at 2879 Claudia Lane off Dauphin Island Parkway in the Theodore Industrial area. The call was received at approximately 7:10 p.m. on Friday evening, December 13, 2002. Firefighters first arrived on the scene at approximately 7:19 p.m. Because most hot and/or burning metals react with water firefighters decided to dump the contents of the hoppers into metal totes and let the metal pieces cool on their own. It’s unknown what caused the fire to occur and no injuries were reported. The fire posed no threat to the surrounding area and the incident was contained on the property. Engines 7, 19, 20, truck 10, rescue 7, engine 15, truck 10, haz mat 15 and District 2 Chief Mark Hansberry responded to the call. The incident was concluded shortly before 10:00 p.m.
