Dublin Street called Mobile Fire-Rescue on Monday morning, May 6, 2002 for assistance in disposing of some donated chemicals in the school science lab. Firefighters were dispatched to respond to the scene at approximately 9:34 a.m. The responding crew called for the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department Haz-Mat Team to evaluate the situation and determine who would be best suited to do the disposal. Hazardous Material Technicians upon arrival on the scene accessed the situation and determined there was no release, no spills and no danger to students. An evacuation was not necessary. The school is equipped to handle and store small amounts of chemicals but did not have space for the amount that was on hand and needed to properly dispose of it. There were approximately 33 chemicals varying size containers. Gulf Fibers, Inc. had made the donation to the school. Haz-Mat Techs, with the assistance of Mobile County Emergency Management Agency, contacted Gulf Fibers and the University of South Alabama, who both agreed to take most of the chemicals not needed by the school. The scene was turned over to the officials of Williamson High School and Mobile County School Board to make the arrangements for delivery and/or pick up of the chemicals. ###
