Accidental Fire on Houston Street

Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org ACCIDENTAL FIRE ON HOUSTON STREET Mobile firefighters were dispatched to the scene of a reported house fire in the 1000 block of Houston Street, Monday afternoon, May 21. The call was received at approximately 4:01 p.m. and firefighters arrived reporting heavy smoke coming from the single-story, wood frame structure. Once inside the structure firefighters discovered fire in a rear bedroom and were able to quickly extinguish the same. Fire Investigators determined the fire was caused by an electrical problem which caused a window unit air conditioner to over heat thus catching the wood window framing on fire. Damage is estimated at approximately $20 thousand. No injuries were reported. Engines 8, 9, 16; truck 24; rescue 24 and District Chief John Young responded. The Bureau of Fire Prevention conducted the investigation. ###
