CHILD PLAYING WITH LIGHTER STARTS FIRE
Firefighters from Mobile Fire-Rescue Department were called to an apartment fire at Glen Valley Apartments located at 557 Azalea Road on Sunday, March 3, 2002. The call was received at approximately 8:01 a.m. with firefighters arriving at approximately 8:06 a.m. reporting heavy smoke coming from Building H of the complex. The fire appears to have originated in a back bedroom of apartment 110 and extended into the attic above. There was heavy smoke damage throughout with some heat damage in two other bedrooms. Apartment 109, which was vacant and located below Apartment 110, received some water damage in one room.
Ada O’Cain, 40, the occupant of Apartment 110, told Mobile Fire Investigators that her 3-year-old son has a history of playing with fire. The 3 year old told her and the Investigator that he had been playing with a lighter in the bedroom and apparently caught the bed on fire. One firefighter, Chris Williams, received minor burns to his ears and was transported to Springhill Medical Center, where he was treated and released. No other injuries were reported. Damage is estimated at approximately $50 thousand.
Engines 19, 22, 23, rescue 22, truck 5 and District 4 Chief Bill Glisson responded to the fire.
