August Firefighter of the Month

Aug 28th, 2013

August 28, 2013 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2013-27) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org AUGUST FIREFIGHTER OF THE MONTH On June 19, 2013 at 19:00 hrs, Engine 16 responded to the report of one in cardiac arrest at Navco & McVay. When they arrived on scene there was a gentleman lying on the ground with several people standing around him. Firefighter James “Jim” Ramsay of Engine 19, third shift was also one of the people on the scene. While traveling down the road with his family Ramsay noticed the man lying in the parking lot with people gathered around. Ramsay stopped and discovered the gentleman was in cardiac arrest. CPR was being performed but not in an effective manner; Jim took over doing CPR the way he was properly trained. When Engine 16 and Rescue 24 arrived on scene the patient was breathing and had a pulse but was still unconscious. The patient was loaded into the rescue unit for transport. Once the patient was placed on the monitor it was determined that the patient was in V-tach but thanks to the action of Ramsay he had a pulse and was breathing again. When the patient arrived at the hospital he was talking and answering some questions. While we are trained to help people in need and to save lives on a daily basis, nothing says we have to help someone when we are not on duty, accept for our morals and personal standards. With that being said we feel Firefighter Ramsay should be recognized for his heroic actions and his high morals and personal standards. ###
