Building Fire at 255 Carstens Street

Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org BUILDING FIRE AT 255 CARSTENS STREET Firefighters responded to an accidental commercial building fire at Deluxe Auto Body and Paint, located at 255 Carstens Street, Saturday afternoon, August 27. The fire was reported at approximately 2:18 p.m. and firefighters arrived within four minutes and reported heavy smoke coming from three sides of the building. Firefighters also discovered four vehicles inside the building on fire. Due to the high heat and size of the fire a second alarm was called, so crews could be swapped out and prevent heat related injuries. Fire investigators have ruled the fire accidental caused by combustible materials sitting too close to electric heat lamps. There were no reported injuries in the fire that caused an estimated $58 thousand in damages. Engines 8, 9, 14; truck 17; rescue 14 and District Chief Frank Byrd were part of the initial response. Engines 3, 9; truck 4; rescue 23 responded as part of the Second Alarm response. The Bureau of Fire Prevention is conducting the investigation. ###
