Building Fire on Mill Street

Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org BUILDING FIRE ON MILL STREET Mobile firefighters were called to the report of heavy smoke coming from the rear of 2804 Mill Street Wednesday night, June 20 at approximately 8:12 p.m. The single-story building is occupied by Seymour’s Custom Cabinets and was closed at the time of the fire. Firefighters arrived on the scene at approximately 8:18 p.m. reporting smoke coming from the eaves and doors. Once inside they discovered a fire that originated from a 55 gallon drum and spread up an 8x8 post and across the ceiling. Firefighters had to remove part of the roof to reach some of the fire which was in the old pine roof beams. The cause of the fire is unintentional and may have been caused by oily rags inside the large barrel. Damage is estimated at approximately $10 thousand. No injuries were reported. Engines 12, 14, 15; truck 10; rescue 14 and District Chief Dexter Pettaway responded. The Bureau of Fire Prevention is conducting the investigation. ###
