Fire at Azalea Pointe Apartments

Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org FIRE AT AZALEA POINTE APARTMENTS A fire broke out in an upstairs unit of the Azalea Pointe Apartments, located at 651 Azalea Road at approximately 11:49 a.m. Monday morning, June 18. Mobile firefighters arrived on the scene within three minutes of being dispatched reporting smoke showing from the upper floor of the two-story, wood frame structure. A maintenance man with the complex kicked in the front door to the apartment prior to the arrival of firefighters and received unknown injuries. He drove himself to a local hospital. Firefighters discovered heavy fire in the apartment and were able to extinguish it before it could reach any other units in the building. The fire appears to have originated in the kitchen near the stove and the cause is currently under investigation. There was fire spread from the kitchen into the dining and living rooms. There was some minor smoke and water damage to the apartment below. Damage is estimated at approximately $75 thousand. No other injuries were reported. Engines 19, 22, 23; truck 5; rescue 24 and District Chief Marquis James responded to the incident. The Bureau of Fire Prevention is conducting the investigation. ###
