FIRE DAMAGES SIX APARTMENTS
A fire that originated in Apartment D of 752 Monday Street caused damage to five (5) other apartments as well in the Orange Grove Housing Community. The fire was reported at approximately 8:35 a.m. on Monday morning, August 20, 2001. First fire units arrived at approximately 8:42 a.m. reporting smoke coming from the large two-story brick and concrete block building. A second alarm response was called for bringing the total number of fire units to approximately 9. The fire appears to have originated in the upstairs bedroom of apartment D that is occupied by Patricia Edwards. Edwards told Mobile Fire Investigators that she was in the shower when she heard the smoke alarm sound off. She got out of the shower to investigate why it was sounding off. Edwards told fire investigators she then saw smoke and fire in her son's bedroom and immediately prepared to leave the apartment. The fire also spread throughout the attic above before firefighters arrived. The fire damage however was confined to apartment D and the attic. Apartments A, B, C, E and F all received varying degrees of smoke and water damage. Apartment A was not occupied. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. No damage estimate is available yet. No injuries were reported. Engines 3, 8, 11, 12, 14, 18, truck 17, truck 24, rescue 14 and District Chiefs Mike Farver and Ricky Brannon responded.
