Feb 12th, 2003

February 12, 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2003-14) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-5806/Fax: (251) 208-5813 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org FIREFIGHTERS RESCUE VICTIM FROM FIRE Mobile firefighters responded to a house fire located at 1602 Cadillac Drive on Wednesday afternoon, February 12, 2003. The occupant, Mildred Coleman, 65, called 911 at approximately 4:36 p.m. to report that her house was on fire. But when Mobile Fire-Rescue Dispatchers answered the phone all they could hear was “I can’t get out, I can’t get out” and then the phone line went dead. Dispatchers attempted to call back but the line was busy. Firefighters arrived at approximately 4:43 p.m. and reported heavy fire showing from the rear of the one-story, wood frame structure. Firefighters moved in quickly and discovered Coleman unconscious, on the floor in a front bedroom near the window. Firefighters removed Coleman and she was immediately placed in Rescue unit 24 and transported to Springhill Medical Center. Firemedics advised upon arrival to the hospital she was breathing on her own and able to talk to them. The fire appears to have originated in a rear bathroom and extended into the hallway and attic above. There were varying degrees of smoke and heat throughout the structure. The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time. Damage estimate is approximately $30 thousand. No other injuries were reported. Engines 9, 16, 19, truck 24, rescue 23, 3 and Acting District Chief Captain Mark Stewart responded. ###
