FIREFIGHTERS RESPOND TO APARTMENT FIRE
Firefighters from the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department were called to respond to a fire in an apartment building, located at 1109 Government Street, early Thursday morning, October 25, 2001. The call was received at approximately 1:20 a.m. after an occupant discovered smoke. Firefighters arrived shortly after at approximately 1:24 a.m. The fire appears to have originated in a water heater closet and most of the fire was in the crawl spaces between floor and ceiling of the large two-story, wood frame house converted into apartments. The structure contained six apartments which only 3 were occupied at the time. Firefighters were able to retrieve and save most of the occupant's belongings. The fire damage, estimated at approximately $150 thousand, occurred mainly in the crawl spaces and one vacant apartment. There was some heat, smoke and water damage throughout the structure. The cause of the fire is still being investigated but appears to be accidental. No injuries were reported. Engines 2, 3, 8, 9, 11, truck 4, 17, rescue 3 and District 1 Chief Bill Glisson responded.
