Jul 24th, 2001

July 25, 2001 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2001-48) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-5806/Fax: (251) 208-5813 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org FIREFIGHTERS RESPOND TO CHLORINE LEAK Mobile Fire-Rescue Department's Hazardous Material Response Team responded to a 1-ton chlorine cylinder leaking at Harcros Chemical, located at 1803 Telegraph Road on Tuesday, July 24, 2001. The call reporting the leak was received at approximately 4:06 p.m. Mobile Police Department was called to block a stretch of Telegraph Road to traffic until it could be determined the extent of the leak. Shortly after arrival Company Officials with Harcros reported that their own site Haz Mat Team had the leak contained. Haz Mat Techs from Mobile Fire-Rescue Department suited up and entered the site to confirm the leak was contained. It is estimated that approximately 900-1000 lbs. of the chlorine escaped the damaged cylinder. No evacuation was called for and no injuries were reported. The cylinder apparently became damaged while being off loaded from a flat bed truck at Harcros thus causing the leak to occur. The cylinder was left on the truck and then moved to DPC Enterprises so the Chlorine could be safely off loaded into another cylinder. Telegraph Road was reopened at approximately 6:00 p.m. ###
