FIREFIGHTERS RESPOND TO EARLY MORNING HOUSE FIRE
Mobile firefighters responded to an early morning house fire Tuesday morning, July 27, 2004 reported at 1851 Canal Street. Fire Communications received the call at approximately 5:54 a.m. and firefighters arrived at approximately 5:59 a.m. reporting fire at the rear of the one-story wood frame structure. Firefighters were able to keep the fire confined to the rear den area of the house, however the remainder of the house did receive heavy smoke and moderate degrees of heat damage. The occupant, Edie Mae Thomas and her three grandchildren ages 12, 13 and 17 all escaped unharmed.
The fire appears to have originated in the den area behind the television. Mobile Fire Investigators found several electrical wires and cable cords in that area. There was also a window A/C unit in the area. Investigators have concluded that the fire appears to have been caused by overheated electrical wires. The fire caused an estimated $50 thousand in damage. No injuries were reported.
Engines 8, 9, 23, truck 17, rescue 23 and District 1 Chief Richard Brannon responded to the call.
