Groundbreaking Ceremony Held for New Fire Station 19

Aug 8th, 2025

MOBILE, Ala. -  On August 7th, the City of Mobile and the Mobile Fire-Rescue Departrment (MFRD) broke ground on a new fire station that will provide better accommodations for the MFRD and enhance emergency services for citizens in District 4. Station 19 will be located on Azalea Road at the site of the former Greystone School — just a few hundred yards from the current McCosker Fire Station. For firefighters, a station isn’t just an office; it’s a second home. After 68 years in service, MFRD’s home at the McCosker Station was in desperate need of an upgrade.

This $4.6 million project will replace the aging two-bay station with a larger, three-bay facility that will provide more space for vehicles, equipment, and personnel. Once built, Station 19 will house Engine 19 and Rescue 19 as well as dedicated Haz-Mat units. This project wouldn’t be underway today if it wasn’t for the generosity of Councilman Ben Reynolds, who used capital funding earmarked for his district to cover half of the cost of construction. It’s the largest direct allocation a councilmember has made in a public safety project.

This new facility continues our efforts to replace some of our oldest fire stations. The leadership of MFRD and the Mobile City Council have worked with the City of Mobile's administration to implement a strategic replacement plan. Fire Station 19 will be the third new fire station built since 2018, and we have plans for at least four others in our five-year capital plan. Since 2013, the MFRD and City of Mobile have made significant investments into MFRD’s fleet, equipment, and personnel, and we’ve seen our department continue to earn national recognition. The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department has no plans of slowing down, as we continue to invest strategically, allowing our members to continue providing impeccable service to Mobilians.
